Search for Recognition

Early 1600 the first Dutch VOC ships arrived in the Southeast Asian archipelago, the region which is now known as Indonesia. Their goal was to get valuable spices. Until today the dominant view in the Netherlands still is that the history of the VOC was about trade and Dutch entrepreneurship. The film shows how centuries of Dutch colonialism is remembered quite differently in Indonesia. Main character Jeffry Pondaag (K.U.K.B.) is an Indonesian living in the Netherlands and fights for recognition for the victims of Dutch war crimes, committed during the war of independence (1945-1949).

This film is made by Ringo Schut and Linda Lemmen and produced by media institute DIA in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam.
